It was the Monday directly after Easter Sunday and an early show, so we really didn't expect it to be packed. In fact, it was the first time in a long time that we just paid at the door rather than getting advance tickets. We started out by heading over to Tony's Grillz, the resident food truck outside of Small’s Bar. If you are a meat eater, their burgers are excellent and cooked to order.
Our expectations around the crowd were met when there were only about 25 people by the time Seahag from Ferndale, MI, hit the stage. Seahag is an all-female duo that was the only local band on the bill, and they seemed to be having a great time regardless of the sparse crowd.
The Venomous Pinks
I'd seen The Venomous Pinks at least three times prior (St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit with Anti-Flag and A Wilhelm Scream, in Las Vegas at a Punk Rock Bowling club show at Backstage Bar & Billiards, and again at Punk Rock Bowling on the main stage). All three times I was hoping for them to play my favorite song, "Pizza Slice," but they didn't. The fourth time was a charm, and they played it, along with a slew of their best songs that started with "I Really Don't Care" and "Todos Unidos" and finished with "We Do It Better" and their trademark Quiet Riot "Bang Your Head" outro.
I wasn't familiar with The Anti-Queens until this show popped up, but I took the time to spin their "Disenchanted" CD before the show. It's a bit more rock than punk, but solid, and I was looking forward to seeing them live. Being a four-piece band following a duo and a three-piece, they had a fuller sound, and songs like "Apocalypse She" and "Owe U Shit" stood out. A rocking' good time on a Monday night.
