Punk Rock Record Reviews: The Best of 2025, Part Fifteen.

I listen primarily to punk, with my preferred subgenre being street punk. Speed rock, garage, skate punk, hardcore, pop punk, oi!, ska, grindcore, and even rockabilly fit the bill if done right. If I can catch a live show, it gives the release an edge. Here are a few releases from 2025 that I recommend you check out. These are in no particular order; however, I’m only reviewing releases that are in contention for the best release of the year. If I’m reviewing it, I liked it. When the New Year rolls around, I’ll put them in order and do a final article of the best of the best. Drop a comment at the bottom if there is a 2025 release you think I should check out; I most definitely will.

SecondSELF "The Current Dissent"
Released: May 23, 2025
Format: Vinyl LP, CD, digital download
Label: Punkerton Records
From: Nashville, TN

I waited a while to review this, as I was hoping it would pop up on Bandcamp. It hasn't yet, but I can't wait any longer, as I need these songs on my current playlist. I was lucky enough to catch these guys at Hogs & Heifers, kicking off Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival 2025, and they killed it (also throwing in a great cover of Teenage Bottlerocket's "I Wanna Die"). This is fast melodic hardcore at its finest, the production is perfection, and the song "The Current Dissent" is one of my favorite songs of the year. "Grape Soda and Gasoline," "Bliss," "Moving To LA," and "Fuckface" also made my current playlist, but every song is good, and I feel like I really need to play it all of the way through a few more times. Aw, fuck LA. They were missing a few songs on Apple Music, so I had to get my downloads from Amazon, but it was well worth tracking down. Fans of Bad Religion, Pennywise, Propagandhi, NOFX, The Descendents, or just top-shelf melodic hardcore need this. I'd expect to see this one on my countdown of the best records of 2025.

Snooper "Worldwide"
Released: October 3, 2025
Format: Vinyl LP, Digital download
Label: Third Man Records
From: Nashville, TN

Playing Devo-core, or more specifically Eggpunk (lo-fi and noisy with electronics and intermittent fast beats), Snooper has a unique sound. I first heard them at a Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival pool party in 2024 and was immediately drawn to their crazy stage show, which included a large selection of papier-mâché props. At one point the singer disappeared; later a giant papier-mâché bedbug appeared in the mosh pit, and then said bedbug climbed up on stage and was revealed to be the singer. Their song "Bed Bugs" was great and prompted me to go see them a second time (later that year) in Detroit when they played a show at Third Man Records. It seems like it's been a long wait for their 2025 release (which is on Third Man Records), with the first single and a split with Prison Affair coming out much earlier and containing a sample of the songs. Today I was finally able to spin the entire thing. It was worth the wait, as they saved several of the best for last. "Company Car" and "Worldwide" were early favorites, but I also added "Opt Out" and "Hologram" to my current playlist. There is also a notable cover of The Beatles' "Come Together" that should make my upcoming countdown of the best covers of the year.Easily my all-time favorite Eggpunk record. Fans of Devo, FYP, and of course Eggpunk.

Billy Batts and The Made Men "For The Surly Types"
Released: September 5, 2025
Format: Vinyl LP, digital download
Label: Rad Girlfriend Records
From: Ohio

This is another band that I discovered when I was tracking down releases from all of the bands in the lineup for the 2025 Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival. I later ran into their drummer at a The Queers show in Detroit, as he moonlights with Joe Queer's side band, The 66ers. The real Billy Batts was, of course, a mafia figure in the Gambino crime family along with John Gotti (and a character in the movie "Goodfellas"). The Billy Batts and the Made Men song "Take My Rights" was the song that initially blew me away, and their live performance was fantastic (especially their bass player). At the live show, I still remember the guy next to me saying, "If this is what the next generation is doing with punk rock, it's in good hands." Every time I see someone named Dan, I have to say, "Dan is awesome." So, of course, I was glad to see a new release in 2025. Not every song is crazy fast and punk rock, but this is a solid release, and there are plenty of standouts. The short, fast, and angry "Hate My House" and "My Job Sucks" were my picks for my current playlist, and I'm continuing to enjoy this massive 35-minute, 18-track LP. Check it out; it will be worth your while if you like fast punk rock that sticks to the basics.

Dark Thoughts "Highway To The End"
Released: August 1, 2025
Format: Digital download
Label: Stupid Bag Records/ Drunken Sailor Records
From: Philadelphia, PA

Short (11 songs in 16 minutes), fast, Ramonescore punk rock songs. It's uncanny how much they sound like Teenage Bottlerocket, and that's not a bad thing considering that TBR is one of my favorite bands. They have been around close to 10 years, with their first release being in 2014 and their discography containing three previous full lengths (which I plan to check out soon). "Slept Til Two," "Sweet Success," and "Different World" were my favorites, but this is consistent all the way through. Take your time and play it twice. It's also "Name Your Price" on Bandcamp with no minimum; download it and play it even more. I should be able to catch a live show, as they have one coming up on December 11 at Small's Bar in Hamtramck, MI (on tour with Béton Armé). Keep watching for a show review a week or two after. Fans of Teenage Bottlerocket, The Ramones, The Lillingtons, The Queers, Screeching Weasel, or just great pop punk will love this.

Pulley / Fire Sale "Split Personality" Split
Released: September 5, 2025
Format: 7" Vinyl, digital download
Label: Negative Progression Records
From: Simi Valley, CA

4 songs, two from each band, and needless to say—highly anticipated. Songs include Pulley's "Torn Apart By Time" and "Write A Note If You Leave" and Fire Sale's "An Archaic Construct" and "Call Of The Void." Pulley continues their melodic skate punk sound, but it's a cut way above the rest. If you aren't a Pulley fan already, they are literally one of the best in the genre (if not the best). Go back and check out "Bad Reputation," "Soberbeah," and "The Ocean Song" first. Those songs set a very high bar, and the new songs may or may not end up being at that level, but they rip, and they are by Pulley. I was lucky enough to see Pulley live at a Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival club show in 2023, and I ran into vocalist Scott Radinsky when I was walking in and got to talk to him for a minute or so. Scott was previously in Ten Foot Pole and Scared Straight before becoming a relief pitcher (an 11-year career) for Major League Baseball teams that included the Los Angeles Dodgers. If his career had ended there, it would have been amazing, but then he goes on to be the lead singer for Pulley (obviously, the highlight). What a life he has had. Fire sale is great too, and apparently there are "Mustard" or "Baby Pink" (each with Black Splatter) vinyl versions limited to 269 for you crazy record collectors. Here's to hoping for more from Pulley and a tour that brings them to Detroit.

Teenage BottleRocket "Ready To Roll"

Format: Vinyl LP, CD, digital download
Label: Pirates Press Records/ Coretex Records
From: Laramie, Wyoming

Teenage BottleRocket can be called Ramonescore, but honestly they have forged out their own place in punk rock history. Relentless touring, energetic shows, and fast, catchy punk rock have kept them very near the top of the list of my favorite bands. I've seen them live many times, at Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival, Punk In The Park, and club shows in Las Vegas and Detroit. They never disappoint, and if they were playing tonight, I'd be going to see them again. So I don't have to tell you how much I have been anticipating this album (it was maybe my most anticipated release of the year, after The Casualties). I'll admit that it's their fast songs and their humor that really make me a fan (check out "I Wanna Die," "Headbanger," "Why The Big Pause," and "Strung Out On Stress"). This one isn't quite as fast or even as humorous as I would have hoped, but they make up for it in other ways. "She's the Shit," "Post Mortem Depression," and "High Speed Yoga" were the first singles, with the songwriting and production being top-notch. They also took time to produce a ton of great art and merchandise to go with the release. With just those songs I would already be giving this a stellar review, but the full 14-song album takes it to another level.

Violent Disorder "United Front"
Released: August 29, 2025
Format: 7" vinyl, cassette, digital download
Label: Uprising Records
From: California
Photo of the album cover that is being reviewed.

Anti-fascist Oi! for the next generation. Their second EP (their "Skinhead Worldwide" 7" was released in 2024), this time with guest background vocals by members of Conflict and Oi Polloi, which definitely adds some cred. "Blackpool" and "Mob Violence" were the standouts, and if you like Oi!, you will like this record. Pressed in all sorts of color vinyl variants as well, for you record collectors. Fans of Violent Way, Oil!, Reckless Upstarts, Haymaker, Potato Skins, CMI, and just really good, solid Oi! music will want to pick this up. I will be on the lookout for a full length, hopefully coming soon.

P.O.A.C. - "Mangled and Twisted"
Released: August 20, 2025
Format: Digital download
Label: Revelation Records
From: Oakland, California
Photo of the album cover that is being reviewed.

These guys (Planet on a Chain) have been around for about 6 years and had a release in every one of them (starting with 2020's "This Won't Get Any Fucking Better" 7" on Blind Rage Records and moving up to several full lengths on Revelation Records). This starts out with the title song "Mangled and Twisted" (my pick for my current playlist); no intro, just rips right into it. The three songs average about a minute and a half each and never let up save a few well-placed breakdowns for those that like to two-step. This is a three-song single that precedes their upcoming "Ritual Routine" 12-song LP, which I will be picking up as soon as it's out. Fans of Terror, Bad Beat, CMI, Judge, or just crazy beat-down hardcore will like this.

Nuke 'Em High "S/T"
Released: April 21, 2025
Format: CD, Digital Download
Label: Self-released
From: Los Angeles, CA
Photo of the album cover that is being reviewed.

Short, fast, and raw old-school-sounding punk rock songs out of Los Angeles. This one starts out with "Old Punx," a 50-second blast that maybe hits a little close to home, being that I fit into that category. At times the guitars remind me of Dayglo Abortions, and that is high praise coming from me. Some of the song titles ("I Peed In Your Dryer," "Fuck You, It's Funny," "Farting Down My Dickhole," "I Farted In Her Mouth") are also reminiscent of The Dayglos. Nothing really new here, but if you like old-school, offensive, raw punk rock, this will be up your alley. "Old Punx" made my current playlist. Fans of Saber Tooth Gary, The Meatmen, Dayglo Abortions, and M.D.C.

Plastic Meat "S/T"
Released: August 28, 2025
Format: Digital download
Label: Self-released
From: Madrid, Spain
Photo of the album cover that is being reviewed.

This one was a surprise; it looked interesting, but I wasn't expecting it to be this good. Female vocals and dirty garage rock-sounding guitars. 4 songs averaging under 2 minutes each, catchy and just begging to be turned up to full volume. It was "I Need To Sleep" that ended up on my current playlist, but I could have just as easily picked any or all of them. This is another one that is "Name Your Price" on Bandcamp with no minimum, so buy it if you can, but if not, get it anyway. Fans of The Oblivians, The Briefs, The Dirtys, New Bomb Turks, and Amyl and the Sniffers.
