Kim Theory EP Release Show at Backyard Party

Local favorites, Kim Theory, have quickly become somewhat of a legend within the teen scene of NELA and Pasadena. On a rainy Saturday night, the band took the stage to celebrate the release of their E.P., Bitch Scene.

Up from OC, Two Step Chicks (Natalia Inez, Zuriel Martinez, Ben Brodie, Valeria Vaca, Nick Pilger) opened the night, wowing the early crowd with their spin on Radiohead’s “Creep” and Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” along with several originals. The band, fronted by Natalia’s powerful and snarky vocals, incorporates elements of ska, grunge, and Latin rock, a rare combo, especially in female-fronted bands. Do not miss Two Step Chicks’ headlining show coming up at the end of December.

Mad Hunny (Kaia Lobato, Miya Schultheis, Zoe Bernard) up from San Diego, hit the stage next. They accurately describe themselves as ‘Olivia Rodrigo vocals meet Daisy and the Scouts instrumentals.’ Mad Hunny stunned and rocked with loud and fast covers of popular songs from Katy Perry and the Neon Trees. Keep an eye on these ladies, as they plan to release their own music soon.

And finally, Kim Theory! (Lula Seifert - guitar, Zoey Su - drums, Audrey Cymone - vocals, Lucy Fraiser - bass). A completely sold-out room of fans and friends SCREAMED as the girls launched straight into four songs from their new EP. They threw in covers of iconic songs that their crowd has come to expect, like Chappel Roan’s “My Kink is Karma,” and invited a guest to join them on a decidedly hardcore interpretation of Olivia Rodrigo’s appropriately titled, “Brutal,” which had the whole place jumping up and down and screaming along. It seemed as if every kid in the room knew every word to every song in their set list as they careened from one to the next with little to no pause for banter. The vibe was fun, loud, and almost felt cathartic, as this one was one of the first large gatherings of teens since the Altadena fires earlier this year, only a mile up the street from the venue.

Kim Theory describes themselves as “Riot-Grrrl-adjacent” with indie and punk influences, often incorporating pop covers with their own unique spin. The band began when Zoe and Lula simply decided they wanted to be in a band; they both knew Audrey, and the band formed. They met Lucy at one of their shows earlier this year, and she’s been with them ever since. After gathering enough material for an EP, the band stepped into the studio with the legendary Paul Roessler (The Screamers, 45 Grave, Mike Watt, Nina Hagen) to record Bitch Scene, available now on BandCamp.
